  • Mistress Misery ( A Little Red Riding Hood )

Memory used to be my mistress. Then I traded her for Misery. She’s the one lingering at the end of the bar wearing the skin-tight red dress that hugs her form so tightly the wolves can’t help but salivate. They flock to her like sheep to the Sheppard, hoping she’ll show a little more skin and give them a taste. But that’s why Misery’s a tease, because she never gives what she can afford to lose. She plays her cards close to her chest, and never lets anyone see what move she’s got tucked up under her dress. She taunts the wolves, but she loves me. She’ll flaunt what she’s got all the way down the bar, wagging her ass at the wolves watching her walk away, and take a seat right beside me. She knows I’m not interested in what she’s selling, and that’s why she always sits with me. So I buy her a drink, because Misery loves company, and no one else has ever dared to cross the floor and make my acquaintance.

Misery's a bit like Little Miss Red Riding Hood, or so she fancies herself that way. An innocent led into the depths of the forest where she was raped by the wolf, and became the bitch she is today. At least this is the story she told me. From the dramatic re-enactment I can only surmise she didn't fight him very hard. He didn't tear the red hood from her shoulders, but she undid the tie at her throat and let it fall to the earth. He tasted flesh and she tasted freedom. In the end they both got what they were seeking: satisfaction. And in the end I've only gotten what I sought: someone to write about. Misery loves to be the center of attention, and I am her favorite author. She says I give her words and movements a reality she could never muster on her own. She gives my words a picture they could never paint on their own; it's not an even trade, but neither did the wolf get a fair share when he took what never belonged to him in the first place. Now he can't help but drag himself back time and time again for more of the same; Misery's insatiable.
